The Sentry
The Worcestershire Regiment Group will shortly bring to fruition a project to place a statue on the piece of grassland in front of St Helena Court, Brockhill Village. The magnificent bronze statue to be known as ‘The Sentry’ is a life size representation of an ordinary soldier of the Worcestershire Regiment who is ‘on watch’. It has been produced by the renowned artist John McKenna and is based on an original held in Worcester Museum.
The Sentry will inform and remind people for many years to come that this area is the former home of the Worcestershire Regiment and of its importance in our local history.
The project has been supported and financed by many local individuals and organisations. One of those supporters, Griffiths Contractors, will commence the installation on Monday 23rd May. No road closures are required but they will fence off the whole of the grass verge area where the statue is to be located. The work e.g. the path, preparing the base for the statue etc. will take approximately two weeks, during which time there will also be a ‘welfare unit’ on site for those working there.
In the week commencing 6th June (exact day to be confirmed) the statue will be delivered; again no road closures are required as they will access it from behind, via St Helena Court and use a tele-handler to position the statue. The statue will be placed in position, lifted off, fixing studs positioned, and then firmly secured in its final position. Further work on the base, information board and benches will be carried out once the statue is in position. Later on still, the whole area will be planted and landscaped to create an attractive entry point to our local area.
The picture shows the sentry in clay during manufacture.
