Unique training opportunity for Armed Forces veterans

Former members of the UK’s Armed Forces are being offered the chance to be part of a project to restore a historic Droitwich Spa farmhouse to its former glory.

Two full-time trainee carpenter apprentice posts are available as part of the Willow Court Farmhouse restoration project. The positions are being offered specifically to ex-service personnel as part of Wychavon’s commitment to the Armed Forces Covenant, which pledges extra support to veterans to ensure their service to their country does not leave them at a disadvantage.

Anyone who is a working-age veteran, living in the area and within travelling distance of Droitwich Spa with an interest in carpentry or construction, is being urged to apply for the role.

The two successful trainees will work with specialist heritage and conservation contractor Messenger on the project, which is set to last about 80 weeks. They will carry out a full-time carpentry training programme, working alongside experienced carpenters, as well as gain knowledge of traditional and heritage building practices.

The project is about to enter its next phase which will secure the preservation of the Grade II Willow Court Farmhouse and its transformation into six affordable flats. It has been made possible with support from Wychavon and The National Lottery Heritage Fund, with thanks to National Lottery players.

The site is overseen by Worcestershire Building Preservation Trust in partnership with Wychavon and Platform Housing Group.

Cllr Rob Adams, Armed Forces Champion on Wychavon District Council, said: “I’m delighted we’re able to offer this unique opportunity to our Armed Forces veterans to be involved in a fascinating heritage project that is going to make a real difference to our communities once finished.

“This is another example of the way the covenant has helped us to support our ex-servicemen and women, and the wider Armed Forces community.”

Anyone interested in finding out more about the role should email Patrick.Connelly@wychavon.gov.uk for a trainee job description and details about how to apply. The closing date for applications is 14 June 2024.

Seatbelt covers to help neurodivergent children and adults as part of ‘Project Treasure’

Hundreds of seatbelt covers will soon be issued to neurodivergent children and adults to help emergency responders provide appropriate support.

Malvern Hills and Wychavon District Councils have joined forces with the West Mercia Police Autism & Neurodiversity Network to deliver ‘Project Treasure’ which will see 500 seatbelt covers provided to children and adults who live or travel through the two districts.

The seatbelt covers will include a contact card with important information about the child or adult- and their needs- if they are ever to be involved in a road traffic collision.

The card will explain how best to help them should the parent or carer be unresponsive or unable to relay the information.

Richard Cooper, Temporary Deputy Chief Constable of West Mercia Police, said: “Emergency responders are called to all sorts of different incidents. What is common to all of them is that people are involved who need our help. These seatbelt covers will assist us in considering the individual person we are helping, and I am grateful to everyone who has committed time to making them a reality.”

Cllr Rob Adams, Executive Board Member for Stronger Communities, Culture and Sport on Wychavon District Council, said: “We are proud to be a part of this important project which will support people affected by neurodivergent conditions. It’s great to fund such crucial work to better support our community at a time of need.”

Cllr Natalie McVey, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Health at Malvern Hills District Council, said: “We are so pleased to be able to support this amazing project which will give that peace of mind to parents and carers. The covers will give emergency workers important information to enable them to provide the life-saving care that may be needed”.

The covers will be distributed to special education providers, but residents can apply for a seatbelt cover by visiting www.wychavon.gov.uk/community-safety/project-treasure or www.malvernhills.gov.uk/community-safety/project-treasure
